Who We Are
The Philippine Coast Guard Auxiliary (PCGA) was conceived on February 9, 1972 during Philippine Navy Day cocktails at the Philippine Navy Officers’ Club, when the then Commandant of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) announced plans to form a civilian volunteer unit to assist the Coast Guard. Supported by Navy officers and Manila Yacht Club officials, this initiative led to the formal establishment of the PCGA.
Originally created to help in search and rescue, especially by boat and yacht owners, the PCGA’s role expanded to include boat safety, maritime safety, and community support. Its legal foundation is now clearly defined under Section 11 of Republic Act No. 9993 (PCG Law of 2009), recognizing the PCGA as a civilian volunteer organization assisting the PCG in:
Promoting safety of life and property at sea
Preserving the marine environment and resources
Conducting maritime search and rescue
Maintaining aids to navigation
Supporting recreational safety
Enhancing maritime community relations (civic action, NSTP participation, youth development, and related activities)
Today, the PCGA operates nationwide with a district under every Coast Guard District, following PCG-approved annual plans and programs and governed by a PCGA Manual of Regulations. The passage of RA 9993 further strengthened the partnership between the PCG and PCGA in pursuit of a safe, clean, and secure marine environment for all Filipinos.
